Summer is around the corner and it’s the time of year to shed the layers, break out the short sleeves, and throw on the sunglasses. Have you considered what your signature staple pair will be for 2015? You may be thinking thick, wide, white frames or some sleek pilot-inspired Ray-Bans.
Risks of UV Exposure
No matter which way you go, the most important thing to consider when selecting a pair of sunglasses is how well they protect your eyes. Ultra violet radiation can cause cataracts, photokeratitis (a painful sunburn on the surface of the eye), and skin cancer around the eyes. Blue and violet portions of the solar spectrum can cause macular degeneration when an individual with light-sensitive eyes is exposed to this light over a long term period.
Tips for selecting a pair of quality sunglasses:
- Select lenses that block 99% to 100% of UVB and UVA rays.
- Look for ANSI Z80.3 blocking requirements as this is set by the American National Standards Institute.
- Seek out lenses that offer UV 400 protection, which block even the tiniest UV rays.
Technically, sunglasses are like sunscreen and should be worn year round. So, go ahead, pick some shades for each season to create your signature look. Just make sure you are picking quality, UV filtering sunglasses to protect your health and eyesight!
